For nearly a decade, I installed hundreds of their openers and rarely considered anything else. They had earned a reputation for building dependable products, and I was happy to recommend them.

Over the last several years, however, something changed.

One of my favorite features is creating schedules or rules.

Need to let in:

• a dog walker?

• a neighbor?

• a family member?

You can open the garage remotely or provide temporary virtual access without handing out permanent remotes or keypad codes.

Helpful diagnostics

Modern smart openers can also report error codes, track door usage, and sometimes alert you when maintenance may be needed.

Those aren't flashy features.

They're genuinely useful.

Should You Buy a Wall-Mounted Garage Door Opener?

Wall-mounted (or "jackshaft") openers have become very popular.

They certainly look impressive.

They also create a cleaner garage ceiling by eliminating the overhead rail, which can free up storage space or make room for a vehicle lift.

But here's something that surprises many homeowners.

I don't recommend them for most residential garages.

Originally, wall-mounted openers were designed for high-lift and vertical-lift garage doors where traditional overhead openers simply wouldn't work.

Today they're often installed because they look modern and can be the quietest option.

While they absolutely have their place, traditional overhead openers generally push the garage door more evenly into the weather seal and have less potential for cable-related issues.

If you have:

• a high-lift garage

• limited ceiling space

• a car lift

• storage needs above the door

a wall-mounted opener may be the perfect choice.

Otherwise, I usually recommend sticking with a traditional overhead opener.

Professional Openers vs. Big Box Store Models

This is another question I hear all the time.

"Can't I just buy one from Home Depot?"

You certainly can.

Genie 6170 Wall Mount

If your application is a good fit for a wall-mounted opener, the 6170 is incredibly quiet while opening up valuable ceiling space.
